Sahib Singh Verma dies in road
The incident took place in a place called Khandwamor 10 kms from Shahjahanpur.
 INDIA , 30-June-2007  7:32:16 AM
Senior BJP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma has died in a road accident on Saturday in Alwar district of Rajasthan approximately 120 kms from Delhi.

The mishap occurred at 2:30 pm (IST) when the car in which Verma was travelling collided with a truck on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. Verma's driver and gunman were also killed in the accident.

The incident took place in a place called Khandwamor 10 kms from Shahjahanpur.

Verma was travelling from Neemkathana town in the Sikar district to Delhi. The BJP President Rajnath Singh has confirmed his death and termed his death as a big loss for the BJP.

The 63-year-old leader was returning from shrine at Ajmer Sharief in Rajasthan. Verma died on the spot and is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.

Verma was the Chief Minister of Delhi between 1996 and 1998. He was BJP vice president.

Born on March 15, 1943, in Delhi's Mundka village, the former teacher rose from the ranks of a councillor in the Metropolitan Council of Delhi in 1977 to become the Union Labour Minister in 2002.

Feud with Khurana

His stint as the Chief Minister of Delhi was marked by his running feud with archrival in Delhi politics Madan Lal Khurana.

The Jat leader had replaced Khurana as Chief Minister in 1996. His tenure was marked by skyrocketing onion prices and water and power crises and he was replaced by Sushma Swaraj in October, 1998.

Described by some senior bureaucrats as the ''bull in the China shop'', Verma openly reprimanded them for expressing reservations about his decision to stick to the 9.5 per cent interest rate for EPF contributions.

Verma began his political career as a RSS Pracharak and was made the Delhi Education and Development Minister in 1993.
