Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and UPA Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil waving to the crowd at the rally in Chennai
 INDIA , 2-July-2007  0:58:44 AM
The presidential candidate of the United Progressive Alliance and the Left parties, Pratibha Patil, kicked off her election campaign by addressing a massive women’s rally in Chennai on Sunday.

She called for a combined effort of the people to uphold the principles of secularism, equal respect for all faiths, social harmony and all-inclusive development.

Shortly after viewing the women’s rally along with Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi and leaders of Congress, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Indian Union Muslim League, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Dravidar Kazhagam, Ms. Patil stressed the need for making a combined effort to ensure the development of every citizen of the country.

“I begin my tour as Presidential candidate at this meeting in Chennai …It is a moving experience for me to see such a vast number of women expressing solidarity with me on this historic occasion in our democracy, when the UPA-Left and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have proposed my name for the Presidential election,” she said.

Expressing her gratitude to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and all the leaders of the UPA, Left parties, BSP and other friendly parties for supporting her candidature, she said that she was deeply conscious of the tremendous honour bestowed on her and she was aware of the stupendous responsibilities that awaited a person if elected as President.

Throughout her public life she had worked for the empowerment and development of women, Ms. Patil said. Recalling the glorious role of women in the freedom movement, she said many of them who participated in the struggle for Independence in response to the call of Gandhiji, had faced lathis and bullets of the colonial rulers.

She also referred to the contributions made by women in different fields in the process of making India a strong and powerful nation.
