| The manuscript of a letter Mahatma Gandhi wrote 19 days before his assassination in 1948 will not
not be auctioned in the UK on Tuesday, Indian High Commission sources say.
They said they were in discussions with auctioneers Christie's in getting the manuscript on behalf of the government.
''We are currently in discussions with the auction house on the modalities of acquiring the letter on behalf of the government of India,'' the sources said.
A spokesman for Christie's told NDTV, ''the letter has been withdrawn from the auction by its owner.''
Gandhiji's manuscript written for his journal ''Harijan'' was among the letters of famous personalities that were to go under the hammer tomorrow.
Christie's had even fixed a reserve price of 9,000 to 12,000 pounds for the priceless document.
Several Gandhians had urged the government to initiate efforts to prevent auction of the letter and get it back to the country.
The government had also considered entering the bid.
