Baby elephant found dead in Orissa
This was the first ever example of rehabilitation of a baby elephant.
 INDIA , 3-July-2007  1:38:26 AM
An elephant calf, Kalinga, whose movement was being monitored by the forest department has been found dead in Orissa.

Kalinga, who had been separated from its herd after she fell into a ditch on May 5, was reunited with them after 40 days.

She was rescued and kept under the care of wildlife officials till June 16 when DFO Akshay Patnaik's efforts to re-unite her with her mother paid off.

This was the first ever example of rehabilitation of a baby elephant.

Body found

But on the June 26 Kalinga went missing. Her decomposed body was found on Sunday.

The Officials though very upset are now trying to identify what went wrong and whether the calf's immunity was affected during her time away from the herd.

For Patnaik who kept tracking Kalinga even after re-union this has come as a shock.

''I did not believe that Kalinga is no more. It's such a shocking news! Always the idea of wild lifer is to see them in the wild. We were expecting that once she goes to the wild she will regain her vigour and vitality and everything will be okay. May be this did not click,'' said Akshay Patnaik, DFO, Chandka Wildlife Division.

Elephants of her herd are still guarding the area where Kalinga died. There is evidence that the entire herd was present around the dying calf.

Wild animals especially young ones are susceptible to infection when they are out of their natural habitat.

That possibly explains why quite a few of rescued baby elephants have died in the Nandankanan Zoo.

''The past records say all the baby elephants died because of pneumonia. So may be the death was caused by the change in climate and heavy showers and because there was no top canopy to give protection,'' said Patnaik.

Kalinga may have died but this well documented case needs to be studied by experts to throw more light on rehabilitation of wild animals.
