| It's Pratibha Patil vs Bhairon Singh Shekhawat for the presidential polls. However, the straight contest has nothing straight about it.
For almost a fortnight, the NDA attacked Patil for failed banks and sugar mills. Now it's Shekhawat who is in the line of fire.
A document from a Rajasthan court circulated by his rivals shows how three decades ago, two arrest warrants against Shekhawat were allegedly withdrawn in 1977 soon after he became chief minister.
The cases were lodged during Emergency.
''The Congress party officially, unofficially, informally, formally is not into any mudslinging campaign as the BJP has been doing,'' said Priyaranjan Dasmunshi, I&B Minister.
Orchestrated campaign
A new spin to the presidential poll campaign by the two main parties - triggered by the BJP and reciprocated by the Congress. Patil may have the numbers. But to battle NDA's mudslinging, the Congress has a team digging dirt against Shekhawat.
Patil has prepared a protective campaign schedule.
She has a Control Room and a Core Committee.
The committee of leaders from different states and expertise meets Patil daily.
It prepares her speeches and reports regularly to Sonia Gandhi.
Women Rights will be the mainstay of Patil's campaign.
In comparison to Patil, Shekhawat's campaign is a different ball game involving two main elements.
One garnering support, which Shekhawat is doing himself. The other is the offensive against Patil, for which the NDA or largely the BJP is responsible.
Campaign tactics
Shekhawat is short of numbers. To make up for it, the BJP is out to rattle the Congress. A pucca shamiyana at NDA Convenor George Fernandes' residence is nowadays BJP's nerve centre.
Leaders hold briefings and give off the record tidbits against Patil. But on the face of it, Shekhawat's tactics will be:
Not to travel for votes
Won't resign to restrain the Congress
