| Two youths were killed and five others travelling on the footboard of a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus injured, in an accident near Udayam Theatre bus stop in Ashok Nagar on Wednesday. The vehicle was trying to overtake a stationary MTC bus.
According to the police, the bus plying between Vadapalani and Vandalur was about to move when the other bus, operating between Koyambedu and Tiruvanmiyur, tried to overtake it. The bus dashed against the stationary vehicle and the footboard travellers were caught in between.
While Manikandan (20) died on the spot, Srinivasan (20) was “brought dead” to the hospital, the police said. Both were ITI students. The injured have been admitted to hospital.
Following the accident, irate passengers damaged the glass panes of the bus. Driver Karunanidhi, who fled the scene, was arrested later.
Preliminary investigations showed that the erring driver had miscalculated the gap between the vehicles. MTC authorities said the driver had over 10 years experience.
Last month, an MTC bus rammed into a few vehicles at a busy junction near the Koyambedu mofussil bus terminus, killing a cyclist and injuring five others.
