| The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has decided to go only for buses with doors, a move aimed at preventing footboard travel.
A traffic improvement committee and the transport corporation high-command have recommended this to the Government.
Senior officials who met at the Secretariat on Friday under the aegis of the committee discussed the issue of footboard travel on public transport buses in the aftermath of the death of two students at Ashok Nagar a couple of days ago.
MTC managing director R. Balasubramanian, who is a part of the committee, said it had been recommended to the State Government to introduce only buses with doors, including those to be operated for regular service. “It will be the foolproof way to avoid footboard travel accidents,” he said.
The decision comes ahead of the MTC’s major fleet expansion, planned before Deepavali festival this year. It has plans to add 1,000 buses to its fleet – 500 for augmentation and the rest as replacement for old buses.
At least 650 of these buses are being planned for regular service.
MTC has introduced buses with hydraulic doors for deluxe services in recent months. The drivers of the buses operate the hydraulic doors and have been instructed to keep them closed while on the move.
Officials said the air-assisted hydraulic doors would increase the cost of the buses by between Rs.25,000 to Rs.35,000. One official pointed out that the sum was small when compared to the gains it would bring.
