Rajasthan dam collapses, 40 villages submerged
The Jaswant Sagar dam has collapsed after two days of heavy rains in Rajasthan as a result 40 villages nearby have submerged.
The 118-year-old dam had developed cracks after the continuous rains. Large parts of Jodhpur and Pali districts have been flooded.
The army has been called in to help with relief operations.
Road traffic between Jodhpur and Jaipur has been disrupted and government bus services on this route have been suspended since last evening.
Fortunately most of the villages had been evacuated before they went under water thanks to an alert issued by the local administration on Friday.
Forty villages in Jodhpur district and 20 villages in Pali district are completely submerged.
People airlifted
At least 18 people have been airlifted by rescuers from the flooded Khawaspura area.
The administration is surveying the area with the help of a helicopter to see if there are any people marooned.
Road traffic between Jodhpur and Jaipur has been disrupted.
The dam had been overflowing, this is something that had not happened for over 30 years.
The region is part of the Marwar region where severe floods in Barmer district had left over a 100 people dead in 2006.
