Mumbai trains' safety raises concer
Now a year later, are Mumbai's trains and those who travel on them more secure?
 INDIA , 9-July-2007  3:43:53 AM
In the aftermath of 7/11, Mumbai's train stations were meant to be turned into high security zones with more guards and more detectors.

Now a year later, are Mumbai's trains and those who travel on them more secure?

NDTV put those claims to the test, starting with one of the first targets of the 7/11 bombers: Churchgate station.

Nearly 2.7 million people travel everyday by the Western line. On Monday NDTV's Anant was one of them, disguised and unshaven with two bags, one red suitcase and a duffel bag.

He walked right next to the security posts but did not have to walk through the sole metal detector or open his bags.

For the next 15 minutes Anant stood not too far from the check post, walked a few times next to the men in khakhi, but no one noticed him until he bumped into one of them.

Then he was stopped, his name and age asked, which Anant easily faked and then the cops let him off without even a peek into his luggage.

Of the three entrances to Bandra station that are manned by cops, only one has a metal detector.

The constables there are engrossed in conversation. Anant walks past with his bags without raising an iota of suspicion.

At Andheri station too his bags draw no attention nor does his restless behaviour. No frisking, no metal detectors not even a question. Anant walks right through with no checks.

Need for vigilence

But the police say it's impossible for them to monitor every inch of Mumbai's sprawling overcrowded train network.

They say they had asked commuters to be more vigilant, which again NDTV put to the test by reconstructing the manner in which the 7/11 bombs were planted.

Anant boarded first class of Borivali local at Bandra station and kept his duffle bag on the rack. At Vile Parle, he got off the train but left his bag behind.

Not one person in the compartment cared as the bag lay there unattended, unnoticed.
