| With the IT corridor work delayed, life on OMR has become miserable for motorists and pedestrians

| A “contractual problem” is holding up work on a 17-km stretch of the Information Technology Corridor on Old Mamallapuram Road (OMR). Not much work has been taken up after the 3-km stretch from Madhya Kailash Temple was completed.
The State Highways authorities on Friday fixed a new deadline of July 31 for the Malaysian contractor to “show visible improvement on the IT corridor.”
Official sources told The Hindu that if the contractor was unable to show tangible results before the fresh deadline, the Government planned to identify four new contractors to complete the work expeditiously.
The Rs. 220-crore project would now cost another Rs.20 crore. The cost escalation would be shared by the Government and the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC).
The sources, hinting at what could lead to further delay, said four new culverts had been planned on the remaining 17-km stretch for quick draining of water. The link road between OMR and East Coast Road near Sholinganallur has also encountered a new hurdle with the Public Works Department informing the Highways Department that the existing bridge near a temple on the road must be raised by another three metres since the Inland Waterway Authority wanted to facilitate water transport.
