Twenty killed in Orissa floods
Relief operations have been ordered but most of the marooned villages are yet to receive any help.
 INDIA , 11-July-2007  3:42:55 AM
The death toll in Orissa's floods has risen to 20 with 13 people dying in Baleswar district.

The floodwaters have started receding in Baleswar, Bhadrak and Jajpur districts but there is no let-up in misery for residents.

Relief operations have been ordered but most of the marooned villages are yet to receive any help.

Flash floods have affected hundreds of villages across five districts. People survived by climbing onto roofs and had little time to save their belongings.

''Everything was washed away and reduced to mud. I lost all my books and certificates,'' said Sradhanjali, a resident.

Villagers marooned

Over a thousand villages are still marooned most have not received help four days after the floods.

''There's no place to stay. I have been using this saree for last five days because I don't have a second one. We are left with nothing. No government help has reached us so far. So we are dependent on others for food,'' said Aarti Behera, another affected villager.

There is no shortage of food and relief material but the administration is taking its own time to reach people.

''We have completed distribution of three days' relief to the affected people which amounts to 6219 quintals. We are in the process of distributing the balance quantity of relief, which is about 10,700 odd quintals,'' said A C Padhiari, Collector, Baleswar.

Floods have destroyed paddy crop across 60,000 acres.

National Highway 60 is the only dry stretch in flood-hit Baleswar district and makeshift colonies have sprung up all along the highway.

People will have to spend another seven to 10 days before they can get back to their homes. But this may not happen if the weather turns bad this weekend.
