Govt under fire
It seems the Indian government took these words seriously though Argentine laws say an appeal is automatic.
 INDIA , 11-July-2007  3:47:13 AM
In his only interview after being acquitted by a lower court in Argentina in the extradition case, Bofors-accused Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi had strong words for the Indian investigative agency.

''I love India so I just want to say that they should stop embarrassing themselves, losing a case against me constantly in every part of the world,'' said Ottavio Quattrocchi, Bofors.

It seems the Indian government took these words seriously though Argentine laws say an appeal is automatic.

NDTV has learnt that the government is trying to drop the appeal to extradite Quattrocchi as opposed to its earlier stand.

''We will now appeal to the Supreme Court,'' said Miguel Almeyra, CBI counsel.

During the last month, the CBI has been wishy-washy about this case, refusing to clarify the status of the appeal. Here's why:

In mid June, the Law Ministry asked ASG Mohan Parasharan to advise whether the appeal against Quattrocchi should be dropped

Parasharan refused to give his opinion, citing reasons of being out of town

Sources say Parasharan indicated that law officers should not be embarrassed by the government's move in this case. He also conveyed to the government that they should be qualified to make their own decisions.

When NDTV contacted Parasharan, he refused to comment.

The CBI is taking the defence of ignorance.

They say that as far as they are concerned the automatic appeal has been filed and will come up for hearing after recess in Argentina, they say they have no idea of any move to thwart the appeal.

But even they cannot deny that Quattrocchi's extradition only failed because they got a very weak warrant against the Bofors accused.
