FCI Director's body identified
It is now confirmed that FCI Director PC Ram was killed in an encounter near Guwahati on Wednesday
 INDIA , 12-July-2007  10:38:1 AM
The confirmation came as PC Ram's son identified his body on Thursday.

Earlier, the ULFA had claimed that Ram might have been killed in the encounter near Guwahati after being caught in the crossfire.

On Wednesday, the police was fired upon from a house where the ULFA militants had taken shelter.

In the return of fire, three people were killed, including a man who the police said, looked like PC Ram. The other two were hardcore ULFA cadres.

''They were young boys, they threatened and said they were from the ULFA. I saw an aged man and their arms so I had to give them shelter,'' said the owner of the house where they had taken shelter.

After the incident, the police were extremely cautious and went through the entire identification process, to avoid any confusion.

Identity confusion

A week ago another body was identified as PC Ram's and then cremated. Shortly after this, ULFA made the family speak to Ram.

''Two of the dead bodies we suspect to be of ULFA cadres and the third resembles the physical description matches that of Dr P C Ram. It's difficult for me to clearly say that it's him. We have asked the family to come and identify if it's Ram. It's a case of a death in crossfire,'' said G P Singh, DIG, Assam Police.

The entire episode has been a major embarrassment for the Gogoi government. Ram was abducted in mid April but the government was never close to securing his release.

Clearly the channels of communication with the outfit have expired and options to neutralise ULFA are narrowing down.
