| More than 25 per cent of Blueline buses running in the capital region are owned by Police personnel. This piece of information might come as a shock but it's true.
''The owner is a policeman. In theory the law is the same for everybody. But when I get challaned, I am let off the hook,'' said Balbir Singh, a bus driver.
This is the confession of a Blueline driver on why he's allowed to get away with murder.
This was exactly the point raised by the Delhi High Court earlier this week. While threatening to ban bluelines the court asked for how many bluelines were owned by policemen and their families.
The answer according to NDTV's sources is 25% of all bluelines, that's about 1200 buses. A well-known fact according to those in the business.
''Most of these buses are owned by policemen in the name of their children and relatives,'' Karamchand, a bus operator said.
The government has given six days to the Bus operators in order to spruce up the condition of the buses.
Hundreds of buses are still in waiting for a speed governor, a safety requirement for all Delhi buses.
The sheer number of them proves that until now nobody cared or gave two hoots for legal safety instructions.
With the police now conducting hundreds of surprise checks, bluelines don't want to venture back onto the road till they can pass the test.
Safety Measures
For the only shop, which supplies speed governors in Delhi business is booming. ''The scarcity is because there is this huge rush. My men are installing as many as 100 speed governors everyday,'' said Prem Gupta of Mahakali Speed Governor.
Speed governors are attached to accelerators and prevent drivers from speeding. In all the accidents in the last fortnight, speed governors were either tampered with or missing altogether.
While bluelines get their makeovers, for the second day in a row commuters risked life and limb to get a bus ride.
