| Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in its election manifesto had promised to implement various schemes with utmost sincerity, as the party was quite confident of the Democratic Progressive Alliance’s victory in the Assembly elections in 2006.
Launching the scheme to provide eggs thrice a week in the nutritious noon meal for children, at a function here to mark the birth anniversary of Kamaraj, which had been celebrated as the Educational Development Day, he said having fulfilled the election promises, the DMK Government enlarged the scope of the welfare schemes, thanks to its stability.
He cited the example of serving boiled eggs under the nutritious meal scheme. The DMK’s election manifesto in 2006 promised to implement a scheme to provide eggs twice a week. The DMK Government fulfilled it. Following the announcement in the budget for 2007-2008, the Government enhanced the benefit by providing three eggs a week, he said.
Expressing concern at the lack of interest on the part of parents in the State in promoting the physical activities of their wards, he said the scheme for supply of eggs would go a long way in ensuring the physical fitness of children, besides enabling continuance of their education. The parents should come forward to “make hay while the sun shines” and motivate their children to avail themselves of the benefits under the scheme, he said.
Mr. Karunanidhi referred to the Act making it mandatory to celebrate the birth anniversary of Kamaraj as Educational Development Day in schools, as the Government wanted to commemorate the late leader’s selfless devotion to service. The Act became necessary to ensure that successive Governments continued the celebrations, he said.
Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu said the Educational Development Day had not been observed as a ritual.
