Pratibha regrets smear campaign
UPA candidate for President Pratibha Patil tries her hand on the charkha at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad
 INDIA , 16-July-2007  2:33:38 AM
United Progressive Alliance nominee for the Presidential election Pratibha Patil here on Sunday regretted the smear campaign against her but said she was committed to serving the people and the country “with utmost humility and sincerity” and maintain the dignity of the high office if elected.

She was addressing a joint meeting of the Congress Members of Parliament and the State Assembly in Gujarat to canvass for votes in the election.

Two Independent members of the Assembly, Popatbhai Jhinjharia and Hemabhai Patel, who have committed their votes to the UPA candidate, were present at the meeting and greeted Ms. Patil with garlands. Most of the party MPs and MLAs attended the brief meeting.

Recounts traditions

She recounted the great traditions of Gujarat and the contributions of the people of the State in the development of the nation. She was confident that the country would be able to “entirely eliminate” the curse of hunger, poverty and illiteracy “in our generation itself,” considering the pace of economic development the nation was witnessing. Economic development should be all-pervasive with the poor, the minorities and the oppressed, reaping the benefits, she said.

Paying tributes to the framers of the Constitution for giving to the people a solid foundation for maintaining democratic traditions, she said, though Indian culture was very old, the nation was still very young and needed contributions from everyone for progress.

During her 45 years in politics, she had faced many challenges and was confident that she would be able to shoulder the new challenges with equal ease and dignity.
