Police harassing my husband
Firdous Arshiya, wife of Mohammed Haneef, who has been charged by the Australian police with supporting a terrorist group, talks to the media
 INDIA , 17-July-2007  1:57:10 AM
“The Australian police are harassing my husband. They are being unfair to him for no reason,” Ms. Firdous Arshiya, wife of Dr. Mohammed Haneef said on Monday.

Speaking to The Hindu after the Australian authorities first granted bail to Dr. Haneef and then revoked his visa, Ms. Firdous said it was a great blow to her and her family after some good news.

“I do not know what to do and nobody is coming to our help. I appeal to the External Affairs Minister to intervene and get my husband released at the earliest,” she said in a choked voice.

Breaking down intermittently during the five-minute long conversation, she asserted that her family had no clue what was happening to her husband in Australia. “All that we know is from the media. I have not been able to speak to my husband so far. Now my cousin will go to Australia to coordinate matters,” she said.

Refusing to reveal the name of the cousin, Ms. Firdous said, “He has applied for an emergency visa and will leave for Australia as soon as the visa is granted.”

“My husband is innocent. If they wanted to revoke his visa, they could have done it on Friday itself when they framed charges against him. But they waited and revoked his visa today. There is something behind this. I appeal to all Indians to pray for us and help us in getting my husband released,” she added.

Earlier, reacting to the news of Dr. Haneef being granted bail, his younger brother Mohammed Shuaib said, “We are relieved now and are thankful to Allah for all these. It has brought us great joy. Now we are only hoping that he will be absolved of all charges and released soon.”
