| Like every monsoon, this year has not been too different in Mumbai with a spate of monsoon related diseases, despite promises and measures to prevent them.
To get a first hand experience of the supposed measures taken by the BMC, NDTV decided to visit two areas prone to outbreaks and found out how things have not improved too much.
With 35 deaths in sixteen days, Mumbai is caught in the grip of monsoon related diseases with over 300 admitted across the city.
To see how well the BMC's Monsoon Action Plan is working, NDTV decided to do some checking on its own.
Krantinagar slum colony in Kurla west located on the banks of the Mithi River gets flooded every monsoon and is one of the high risk areas but this year it appears to have fallen off the BMC's radar.
Since the last week resident Premila Panchal's children have been sick, her 10-year-old son with high fever and her daughter has developed sores on her legs.
''For five days he has been taking medicines. He gets better for a few hours and then collapses. My daughter has sores on her legs. The doctor says its because she walks through the gutter water but what can I do about that,'' said Premila Panchal.
Fumigation drives
Its the same story in virtually every home but local residents say so far no fumigation drives have been carried out nor any effort made to provide them with clean drinking water. At least 15 cases of malaria have been reported in the colony and cases of leptospirosis are also on the rise.
''Malaria cases are on the rise, so is leptospirosis but we haven't got chlorine tablets and no clean up has been done,'' said Dr R P Yadav.
Across the city in Anandwadi slum in Wadala east a similar story is repeated. What makes it even more shocking is that just last week five cases of cholera were reported from the central Mumbai slum.
