| Southern Railway is to add three 12-car rakes in the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu section from Friday. This will facilitate an increase in frequency, especially during the peak hours. The frequency will increase from 72 services a day to 92 with 15 services during the peak hours.
According to a Southern Railway official, with three 12-car rakes, the frequency of services was only 28 till June 30, of which six services were operated during the peak hours.
With the revision of links from July 1, the administration was able to add two 12-car rakes, enabling it to increase the frequency to 72 services, with 12 services during the peak hours.
The increase will provide an additional 33 per cent capacity in each service.
This will work out to an increase of 825 passengers per service per train during peak hours.
The total number of passengers in the section will go up to 75,900 a day, of which 12,360 passengers will be those who travel during peak hours.
