Two sentenced to life in 1993Mumbai
Imtiaz Ghavte enters the TADA court in Mumbai
 INDIA , 18-July-2007  1:9:35 AM
Resuming the sentencing in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case after a month, Special judge P. D. Kode on Tuesday sentenced two to life imprisonment and slapped hefty fines on them. Another accused, the former additional Customs commissioner, S. N. Thapa, did not appear, citing medical reasons.

Mr. Justice Kode sentenced Imtiaz Ghavte to life and imposed a total fine Rs. 2, 27, 000 for his involvement in hatching the conspiracy and executing it. He was found guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosive Substances Act.

The prosecution case was that Ghavte participated in RDX landing at Shekhadi. He was present at the Al Husseini building, where vehicle bombs were readied. He planted RDX in a scooter at Dhanji Street in south Mumbai on March 12 but the bomb did not explode.

Hence, he was found guilty for attempt to murder and damage property, the court said.

The judge noted that the prosecution did not press for death sentence, as there was no explosion and Ghavte was HIV positive and medically unfit.

Ghavte appealed to the court that he be housed in Arthur Road jail for getting proper medical treatment.

Accused Nasim Barmare too was found guilty of criminal conspiracy and committing terrorist acts not resulting in death, among other offences.

He was sentenced to life and imposed a fine Rs.2, 30, 000.

He was found guilty of acquiring weapon training, participating in conspiracy meetings, preparing vehicle bombs and hurling hand grenades at the Sahar Airport. However, no one was injured and there was no damage to property.
