I am no radical, says Haneef
Fresh controversy broke on Wednesday morning as The Australian newspaper published a leaked transcript of Haneef's first interrogation on July 3.
 INDIA , 18-July-2007  10:18:15 AM
Fresh controversy broke on Wednesday morning as The Australian newspaper published a leaked transcript of Haneef's first interrogation on July 3.

In the interview with the Australian police, Haneef has said he is not a radical.

''I am clear from any of the things. I haven't done any crime. I don't want to spoil my name and my profession,'' said Haneef.

''Every drop of blood is human and I feel for every human being,'' he added.

He said he is a Muslim with moderate views and denied taking part in a jihad.

When he realised his cousin Sabeel Ahmed, to whom he had given a SIM card a year earlier, could be involved in the foiled terror bid, he tried to contact the British police but the calls were not answered.

Haneef who has been charged with recklessly supporting the UK terror plot will be treated ''as a terrorist'' which includes solitary confinement for 23 hours a day.

Legal right

One of Haneef's lawyers has admitted to leaking the transcript but defended the move, saying he was within his legal right to do so.

''I have done absolutely nothing wrong in doing this. I have done nothing wrong professionally, I have done nothing unethical and I have done nothing illegal. The document is my client's property,'' said Stephen Keim, Lawyer.

The police say the leak could jeopardize Haneef's trial and was being investigated as possible contempt of court. The Australian Prime Minister John Howard also condemned it.

The Australian PM also said it was absurd to suggest that Haneef's detention would damage relations between Australia and India.

This came on a day when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Australia ought to extend to Haneef, all facilities within the law and the rights he is entitled to.
