TC to abstain from voting
The decision was taken after a party meet on Wednesday evening.
 INDIA , 19-July-2007  1:25:9 AM
In yet another setback for NDA Presidential candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Trinamool Congress has decided to abstain from the Presidential poll on Thursday.

The decision was taken after a party meet on Wednesday evening.

''There was no consensus for Dr Kalam for the second time. In protest we will abstain from voting,'' said Mamata Banerjee, leader, Trinamool Congress.

''Let political parties talking about equidistance know, it's a myth. They can do state politics talking of equidistance but cannot play an important role at the Centre,'' said Sushma Swaraj, leader, BJP.

However, that is not the end of Shekhawat's troubles. Other constituents of the NDA like the Shiv Sena have already said they would be voting for Pratibha Patil.

Now other parties like the JD (S) and TRS, who they had hoped might vote in Shekhawat's favour have also decided to abstain.

But Shekhawat's spokesperson, Sushma Swaraj said that they will still appeal to MPs and MLAs from these parties for support.

Seeking support

Despite heading a coalition with BJP in Karnataka, the Deve Gowda-led JD (S) on Wednesday decided to abstain from voting in Thursday's presidential poll, spurning desperate efforts by the saffron party to enlist its support for NDA-backed independent Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Soon after BJP president Rajnath Singh met Deve Gowda in New Delhi seeking the support of his party, JD (S) spokesman Danish Ali said that the party chief had rejected the request and decided to maintain equi-distance from both BJP and Congress.

So far the JD (S) had kept everyone guessing on whether it will support the UPA or the NDA. The Karnataka unit of BJP had earlier appealed to JD (S) to support Shekhawat.

JD (S) has four MPs and together with 50 MLAs and some supporting independents in Karnataka, the party has a vote share of about 16,000.
