Building collapse toll rises to 27
Debris of the building that collapsed at Borivali in northwest Mumbai on Wednesday being removed on Thursday to rescue those trapped.
 INDIA , 20-July-2007  2:22:33 AM
The death toll in Wednesday’s building collapse in Mumbai’s suburb Borivali rose to 27 on Thursday as rescuers dug out more bodies from under the debris. Structural changes made by some shopkeepers apparently led to the collapse.

Among the dead are 15 women and four children, including a one-month-old baby girl, Asica Marotha. Her mother, Rupal Marothe, a 26-year-old school teacher, however, was unscathed despite being trapped under the wreckage.

The work of removing the rubble is continuing and it is expected to take two more days, official sources said. But deputy fire chief D.J. Gaitonde and his officers do not expect to find any more survivors. Fourteen injured, five men and nine women, are undergoing treatment at three different hospitals in Borivali.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh who visited the site on Wednesday announced a magisterial inquiry. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) said in a press note that “structural changes made by some of the shop owners are believed to be the reason for the collapse.” But people in the neighbourhood said that a shopkeeper disturbed a pillar of the building while renovating his premises and that may have made the structure unstable.

“The residents were aware of the situation and had protested. One of them had even complained to the civic authorities against a jeweller who had disturbed the structure, but nothing was done to check the ill-advised renovation,” said a resident of neighbouring Ratnakunj building. Twelve of the 48 apartments and four of the 28 shops were reduced to rubble.

The tragedy brought out the humanitarian nature of Mumbaiites.

A local Gurudwara arranged for food and drinks for the victims’ families and rescue workers. Mahinder Singh, distributing the eatables and tea, remained on the spot the whole night.

Another Good Samaritan, Nayan Sheth, and his friends volunteered to remove the bodies and take the injured to hospitals.
