Kerala villagers battle nature's
At least 165 people have been killed over the last two months and the going is still tough for others.
 INDIA , 20-July-2007  2:38:16 AM
Close to 30,000 people have been displaced after heavy rains lashed Kerala over the last week.

For people in the affected districts even though the skies have now cleared, the worst is far from over.

At least 165 people have been killed over the last two months and the going is still tough for others.

Mani's family is in a state of shock after he was buried alive in flash floods that washed away a part of his house in a village about 25 km from Kozhikode.

''It happened at about 2:00 am (IST). I woke up but could not get up because my hand was stuck under a slab, I cried for help but nobody responded.

''My son then opened the kitchen door and screamed for help, after which people came and pulled me out,'' said Annama, Mani's widow.

The people of the village are yet to come to terms with the tragedy. It was a cloudburst followed by flash floods, uprooting trees, electricity poles and houses.

Villagers are so terrified that they stay here only during the day and as night falls, they move to safer

places.

Struggle for survival

In many villages in the neighbouring Malappuram district, houses are submerged.

NDTV visited the affected area and found people struggling to cope with the terrible situation.

''Since last morning the situation has worsened. Lots of water entered the house around midnight. We even planned to shift to safer areas,'' said Anandan, a local.

Shutters of the nearby dams have also been opened, thus aggravating the problem.

''This is happening every year but the administration is turning a blind eye towards our problems. Last night none of the vehicles could pass through this road because of water logging,'' said a motorcyclist.

Schools in the affected areas remained shut for a fourth day as the roads and highways are flooded.
