| The story of Harry Potter in India is also about how it has changed the world of Indian publishing.
Sales have been unprecedented of Harry Potter translations from English into Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Malayalam.
But oddly enough in Bengal, which boasts of a huge collection of children's literature, Harry Potter appears to be lost in translation.
''I don't want to read in Bengali because he is an englishman and I want to read it in english only,'' said a Harry Potter fan.
Others simply don't know the book is out in Bangla.
''We're oblivious of the fact that's in Bengali, I don't think its in Bengali I haven't heard of it,'' said another fan.
''Harry Potter in english is backed by huge publicity but in Bangla there is not a single ad. I have to tell shopkeepers to keep the book and give me the money later,'' said Gobinda Nandy, Distributor, Rita International.
Lack of publicity
The Bangla rights have been bought by a publishing house in Bangladesh where the sales have been four to five times higher compared to Bengal.
Sales have been hit by a lack of publicity and the absence of a translation that matches the pace of Harry Potter films.
''The translation quality of Bangladesh is not as good as we can produce. Since I have a kid I got few complimentary copies of the translation. Sometimes it is hard to get through the language. We would like to have our own edition so that masses can access it,'' said Amitava Deb, Distributor, Foreign and Indian Books.
There are hundreds and hundreds of bookshops and stalls on College Street, each of them invariably having a section on children's literature in Bengali but Harry Potter is missing from these piles of books.
The magic of the boy wizard seems to have got lost in the translation or the lack of publicity.
