| Police have found around 30 skulls, which are believed to belong to female foetuses, on Sunday in a deserted well at the outskirts of Nayagarh in Orissa.
The discovery happened after a tip off from the local people.
''After opening the lid of the sealed pit, we have recovered biological waste including skulls of fetuses. But we can give you the final details after due examination by experts,'' said Rajesh Singh, SP, Nayagarh.
Eight days ago, seven female foetuses were found in another well near Nayagarh.
But it was only on Saturday after much public outrage that the government ordered an enquiry.
People in the area point out that there are 12 nursing homes with sex determination facilities but only one of them is registered.
''There is a nexus involving the police, the administration, health officials, doctors and nursing homes. What else explains the fact that 11 out of 12 nursing homes were running illegally? Strong action should be taken against all guilty,'' said Tapasi Praharaj, Activist.
As per the 2001 census, the sex ratio in Orissa is 972 females per 1000 males, but in Nayagarh, it is 939 females per 1,000 males.
Besides this, Nayagarh also has the poorest sex ratio in the state in the 0 to 6 age group.
But this case does not just seem to be limited to Nayagarh, as it is believed that the nursing homes there may be catering to people across the state.
