BJP to stake claim in Goa
He claims he has the support of at least 20 MLAs and that one more independent will join him shortly.
 INDIA , 26-July-2007  3:26:17 AM
BJP leader and former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that he would stake claim to form a government in Goa on Thursday.

He claims he has the support of at least 20 MLAs and that one more independent will join him shortly.

''We have thought of stability for 48 days, this decision is not taken overnight. All aspects have been checked. Everyone knows there has to be some compromise. Every one knows we have to deliver to people. This would not have happened if Congress had functioned in last 50 days,'' said Parrikar.

Two MLAs of the Maharashtra Gomantak Party or the MGP and two independents withdrew support to the Congress led government in Goa.

The Congress led government of Chief Minister Digambar Kamath has collapsed barely one month after it came to power.

Only on Wednesday NDTV had reported about the crisis in his government, but now it's confirmed that Goa has not yet freed itself from the cycle of revolving door governments.

The Digambar Kamath government has been reduced to a minority after five MLAs withdrew support.

The strength of the Congress-led government has now been reduced to 18 MLAs in the 40 member Assembly.

Among the four MLAs who have withdrawn support is Congress MLA Victoria Fernandes who has said she will support the BJP.

Fernandes was threatened with disqualification for defying a whip on the floor of the House during a discussion on the Finance bill on Tuesday.

Fernandes, who was demanding ministerial berth in the Kamat Cabinet, had abstained from the House during the session.

The 2 MGP MLAs and one of the two independent MLAs, Anil Salgaoncar, have already said that they will support the BJP.

MLA clarifies his stand

Earlier Manohar Parrikar had claimed that independent MLA Vishvajit Rane has given his support to the BJP.

But speaking to NDTV on Thursday morning the MLA clarified that his support was still with the Congress led government.
