| The selection of Delhi's Police Commissioner has turned into a public tussle. On Wednesday, high profile police reformer Kiran Bedi said there was no gender bias in the selection of Y S Dadwal.
But changing her tune, Bedi now says that it cannot be a coincidence that three senior policewomen were overlooked in the selection.
''It cannot be a coincidence that three women have not been considered for the top posts''
Just a year ago Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury had written to the Cabinet Secretary about gender inequality in government jobs.
Since then, IFS officer Veena Sikri was passed over for the post of Foreign Secretary and IAS officer Reva Nayyar lost the race for Cabinet Secretary.
''I have got no response. I am on long leave and have no posting. What is this if not gender bias,'' said Veena Sikri, IFS Officer.
There are some who are cautious about branding it as a discrimination issue, while there are others like Devashis who has decided to use the Right to Information Act to find out why Kiran Bedi lost out.
''I should be told why the people of Delhi should not get benefit of services of a super cop,'' said Devashis, RTI Applicant.
On the defensive
However, Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal rubbished the allegations levelled by Bedi saying all the due procedures were followed in the selection of the new Police Commissioner.
''There is a set procedure for selection for any government post. If the Delhi Police Commissioner has been selected then the due procedure must have been followed. As for these allegations I have nothing to say. What do we have to worry about? If someone wants to fight for their right in court why should the government get agitated? said Jaiswal.
The man who now seems set to be Delhi's next police commissioner, Y S Dadwal, meanwhile is not getting into a public wrangle. He says he has the highest regard for Kiran Bedi.
