| Kanimozhi, daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M. Karunanidhi, on Thursday took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Communist Party of national secretary D. Raja and Tiruchi N. Siva, another DMK member, were also sworn in.
The ceremony, which took place in the chamber of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K. Rahman Khan, was attended by Mr. Karunanidhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Parliamentary Affairs Minister P.R. Dasmunsi and political secretary to the Congress president Ahmed Patel.
All Union Ministers belonging to the DMK were present to greet the 38-year-old poetess-turned-politician as she embarked upon her Parliamentary innings.
“My own way”
“I do not have to become the voice of the party at the Centre. There are senior DMK leaders to shoulder responsibilities. Let me go my own way,” Ms. Kanimozhi told reporters.
She said she would take up issues such as 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State legislatures and the issues that her party had been raising.
