BJP govt under fire in MP
Very soon there will be buildings of RSS-affiliated bodies here on government land in downtown Bhopal.
 INDIA , 27-July-2007  3:26:22 AM
The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has found itself at the centre of a raging controversy over land allotments.

It has been distributing prime land in Bhopal to organisations and people close to it on highly subsidized rates.

While the Opposition is accusing it of foul play, the Government it seems is all set to allot land to many more organisations having close links with the BJP.

Very soon there will be buildings of RSS-affiliated bodies here on government land in downtown Bhopal.

The BJP government in the state has allotted these pieces of prime land at dirt-chip rates to its favourite organizations.

For instance, over 30,000 square feet has been allotted to the Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh and the ABVP, the labour and student wings of the RSS.

What's more surprising is that evaluation of the initial payment was done as per the rates that existed 15 years ago.

Prices may have shot up 10 times but the lease amount has been fixed at Re one per annum. No wonder the Opposition Congress isn't impressed.

''The middlemen make all the arrangements for allotment of land. Mostly, the land is given to those associated with the BJP. This is happening not only in Bhopal but also in whole of Madhya Pradesh,'' said Arif Aqueel, MLA, Congress, Madhya Pradesh.

In the last three years, government land has been allotted to 12 private groups, half of whom are close to the BJP and the RSS.

The revenue loss may have run into crore but the government defends its decision.

''The Cabinet does not take these decisions on party lines but they take the credentials of the organizations into account, for instance whether they are working in public interest,'' said Narayan Singh Kushwaha Minister of State for Revenue.

Twenty more such cases of land allotment are pending with the government, of which one fourth of the beneficiaries have close links with the BJP.
