| Yakub Memon, the younger brother of 1993 Mumbai blast mastermind Tiger Memon, has been sentenced to death.
The TADA court in Mumbai sentenced Yakub, a chartered accountant, to death for conspiracy and arranging finance for the serial blasts.
Yakub was found guilty of financing the serial blasts through co-accused Mulchand Shah and the firm M/s Tejarat International owned by his brother Ayub Memon (absconding).
He was also charged with providing tickets to co-accused who were sent to Pakistan via Dubai for training in arms and ammunition and with purchasing vehicles and using them in the blasts by planting explosives.
Yakub was also charged with possessing arms and ammunition and distributing them among co-accused.
There was high drama inside the TADA court as the sentence was being announced. Yakub screamed out against the sentence and pushed policemen around inside the court.
''I forgive the judge. Now I know I will never get justice,'' said Yakub Memon.
As Yakub continued to shout and scream it took a number of policemen to get him under control and lead him out of the courtroom.
His brother Essa finally managed to calm him down.
Three other relatives of Memon, brothers Yusuf and Essa and sister-in-law Rubina have been sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiracy and storing arms.
Judge Kode observed that Essa and Yusuf were given life sentences because they are very unwell and that the prosecution did not ask for a death sentence for Rubina because she's a woman.
Prosecution rejoices
Outside the court, the prosecution rejoiced in its victory as the judge added a contempt notice against Yakub for his outburst.
''This verdict is important as it gives a strong message to other absconding accused like Tiger Memon,'' said Ujjwal Nikam, Special Public Prosecutor.
But the two main family members - Tiger and brother Ayub - are in hiding abroad.
