| Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday expressed anguish at “attempts by certain political parties and friends to stall” development projects initiated by the State Government.
Addressing a function after launching the third phase of the scheme to provide monthly assistance to over 3.38 lakh educated unemployed, he said, if some political parties and persons thought that their political interest could be promoted only through such activities, “we are prepared to step aside, leaving the issue to be settled between you and the people.”
These parties could gloat over the stalling of such projects but it would not benefit the public, he opined.
Matter of achievement
Though the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Government to its credit had brought 11 major industries to the State during the last 11 months, he did not let arrogance or haughtiness or imperiousness to creep in, Mr. Karunanidhi said.
“However, I am agonised to see the attitude of certain persons, who are not prepared to understand this and extend their cooperation,” he said.
Several impediments had to be crossed before an industrial project materialised, he said, referring to the recent violence in West Bengal, owing to protests by farmers and workers at the “instigation of reactionary forces.”
He also cited the opposition by some sections to the four-lane project proposed by the Centre to provide connectivity between the northern and southern fringes of Chennai.
There had been some “miscreants and pests” in society who were bent upon destabilising a Government, which otherwise would get its position consolidated and acquire strength by winning the people’s support through the development of resources and setting up of industries, he said.
Everyone in society could not be satisfied, as there might be shortcomings here and there while implementing projects.
