| Web portal to check cyber crime |

| The Kerala IT Mission and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing or CDAC has launched a web portal, the first of its kind in the country, to check cyber crimes.
Users can log on to www.cyberkeralam.in and register themselves. They will be given a password using which they can share their grievances with experts at C-DAC.
Users can expect immediate tips but if the problem requires a detailed investigation it will be referred to the high tech cell of the Kerala police.
The portal comes close on the heels of fraudulent profiles of politicians, including Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan that appeared on social networking website Orkut.
''People are getting all sorts of mails and they are not able to trace them. You must have heard of sites like Orkut where things are getting published without people's knowledge.
''So all this is creating a lot of confusion and person doesn't know where to go for help. So IT mission and C-DAC has decided to do something to help the normal users of computers,'' said Ramani, C-DAC expert.
Checking cyber crime
This portal will help in checking cyber crimes such as hacking, fishing, fake websites and e mail theft besides a call center will also function from the C-DAC headquarters to help solve the common problems faced by the computer users.
To begin with the call center number 0471-2727004 will be operational during office hours, later it will be made a 24-hour facility.
Experts manning the center will deal with all aspects of cyber crimes besides addressing common problems like computer virus.
''From e-governance we are moving to m-governance. We are looking into new areas, which are emerging even mobile phone tracking. How all this can be prevented. How best law-enforcing agencies can take action in time,'' said Jyothi Lal, IT Secretary, Kerala.
The Kerala Government also plans to provide e-mail tracer facilities to 3200 Akshaya Internet kiosks across the state.
