| In the run-up to Independence Day, Assam has its task cut out. Not only does it have to tackle terror, it now also has to deal with the devastation caused by the floods.
Fifty lakh people have been affected by floods in Assam this year.
Other parts of the Northeast, including some places in Arunachal Pradesh are cut off from the rest of the country.
In terms of losses, 1,000 houses have been destroyed and 15 people killed till now.
Lakhs of hectares of standing crop has been washed away. There have been 52 breaches across Assam mainly due to poor embankments.
''Immediately my priority is to save their lives, second to give the relief, you don't know there will be another wave also, so it will take another month or so that we can get a real estimate of the whole thing,'' said Tarun Gogoi, CM, Assam.
Gogoi is looking at new ways to tackle this menace.
''Assam has been a victim every year, though a committee has been constructed. There has been opposition from Arunachal for the north eastern waterway authority, last three years so it has not picked up.
''This is the first time we will have research where they will research on waterways,'' he said.
Terror issues
The flood couldn't have come at a worse time.
Police recently seized 24 kg of TNT in Dibrugarh and over 1,000 detonators in Sipajhar.
With Independence Day barely a fortnight away, the administration has its task cut out to tackle the floods and provide for law and order as well.
