Escorts sued for refusing poor
The hospital referred the young girl to Escorts only for the institute to refuse admission.
 INDIA , 8-August-2007  3:24:23 AM
The Escorts Heart Institute in Delhi is being sued for allegedly not admitting a poor patient.

The hospital says it is unclear but the charges come just a few months after the Delhi High Court directed all private hospitals not to refuse poor patients.

Nine-year-old Sonu was at the Intensive Care Unit of Bara Hindu Rao Hospital as her heart functions at barely 10 per cent of its capacity.

The hospital referred the young girl to Escorts only for the institute to refuse admission.

''When we went there we couldn't get off the ambulance. They asked us to go back,'' said Usha, Sonu's mother.

Panel appointed

That is when a court-appointed panel stepped in and filed a contempt of court case against Escorts.

The panel points to a Delhi High Court directive that says no private hospital can refuse poor patients.

The committee was set up by the court and comprises two senior lawyers and the Superintendent of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

''We've filed a case of contempt of court. It's very serious because they can even lose their land deal and the government can take over their land in case they're found guilty of charges,'' Ashok Aggarwal, Petitioner.

Different version

But Escorts has a different version of events.

''When this child was brought here the child was accompanied by a doctor from the Hindu Rao hospital and also had a slip of paper which indicated that this child had Diptheria,'' said Dr Rajen Ghadiok, Director, Medical Operations, Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre.

''Diptheria is an infectious disease. We do not admit patients with infectious diseases. The doctor referred this child to an infectious diseases hospital for further treatment,'' he said.

Sonu's lawyers dispute this and say she was originally admitted to the Infectious Diseases hospital but was referred to Hindu Rao. When it was found she had no infection then Hindu Rao said Sonu needed specialised heart care.
