| Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan has been elected to the Bench of the Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London. According to an official release, Mr. Justice Balakrishnan is the third Indian to be conferred with the honour of Honorary Bencher — the first being Justice Sujata V. Manohar, a former Supreme Court judge, followed by Attorney-General Milon K. Banerjee.
The Lincoln’s Inn is one of the four Inns of Court — the other three in customary order being Inner Temple, Middle Temple and Gray’s Inn.
The Inns of Court are unincorporated bodies of lawyers which have the power to call to the Bar their members who have qualified for the rank or degree of barrister-at-Law.
The Lincoln’s Inn is older than other three Inns; its formal records date back to 1422. It takes its name from Henry de Lacy, third Earl of Lincoln, who died in 1311. Its members are students, barristers and benchers. The honour comes after Mr. Justice Balakrishnan addressed the Lincoln’s Inn at a symposium of judges and lawyers this June.
