Indians, Pakistanis come together for I-Day

In Manhattan, food and music was used to spread the message of peace and friendship among citizens of the two countries.

People from both sides of the border feasted on a gourmet meal especially prepared by local Indian and Pakistani chefs from some of New York's most famous restaurants.

''Eating together has a great symbolism in our culture. Families eat together, when they have a fight and separate they stop eating together and when they rejoin they again start eating together. That is what we want to do here and that is why we have this event going on,'' said Alok Ranjan, CEO, Ifood.tv.

Dinner was followed by music performances by Ghazal maestro Asif Ali and vocalist Vishal Vaid. A home away from home, New York City it seems was an appropriate venue for such a remarkable evening.

''The biggest fans of music are listeners and the biggest opponents of this stuff I think are politicians and politics and people who want to keep things segregated for reasons other than the pure love for music,'' said Vishal Vaid, Vocalist.

''If we have it out side, like in New York, we can actually focus on the beauty of the cultures and the music and how similar they are and yet how beautifully different they are. So it helps to take it out of the hot frying pan so to speak,'' he added.

In New York, perhaps for the first time Indians and Pakistanis celebrated their country's independence together and they managed to do so by focusing on the generations of common cultural heritage between the two
