| About 5,000 two-wheeler riders in the city were fined on Friday for not wearing helmet, according to Police Commissioner G. Nanchil Kumaran.
Following the amended order issued by the State Government recently, the police began enforcing the rule. Mr. Kumaran said there was no confusion in the enforcement of law and the drive would continue.
The Commissioner told The Hindu that police personnel had been instructed not to harass public under any circumstances and appealed to the two-wheeler riders to wear helmet.
The traffic police fined 28,000 persons for not wearing helmet since the Madras High Court order directed the government to enforce the rule, he said.
Since Monday, more than 1,000 two-wheeler riders have been pulled up in the southern suburbs alone. Traffic police teams in Tambaram, St. Thomas Mount, Pallikaranai and Meenambakkam among other places have been active.
A spot fine of Rs. 50 was slapped on errant riders.
