| There has been a rise in the number of acid attacks across the country with the latest such attack being reported in Amritsar on Friday.
Two men on a motorcycle threw acid on some girls working at a beauty salon. The girls have been hospitalized with severe burns.
Last week a designer was attacked by unidentified men at her home in South Delhi.
The designer, Tarveen Suri received 80 per cent burns and is fighting for her life.
Seeking amendment
Given the gruesome nature of the offence and the poor conviction rates, the National Commission for Women wants the laws to be beefed up so such crimes are dealt with stringently.
The current laws allowed the attackers of Lakshmi to walk free on bail.
Two men and a woman threw acid on the 16-year-old as she was heading to Delhi three years ago.
It took Lakshmi five surgeries to repair her face, but she didn't give up.
''I want to do something for other girls. I am also preparing for my class 10th, there is so much I want to do,'' said Lakshmi, victim of acid attack.
Lakshmi is now filing a PIL with the help of an advocate to amend existing laws in order to help acid attack victims rebuild their lives.
The NCW, which is supporting Lakshmi, wants insurance for victims.
''The proposal talks about importance of protection and rehabilitation,'' said Aparna Bhatt, advocate.
Living with discrimination herself has given Lakshmi the strength to fight for others and the first thing she wants is to ban the sale of acid across the counter.
