Woman pays for shocking negligence
The surgical device was left behind there five years ago when she had a C-section delivery at the Patna Medical College and Hospital.
 INDIA , 21-August-2007  2:1:59 AM
A lady patient, Sushma Devi, came to a local nursing home in Patna complaining of severe abdomen pain for the last five days.

After being operated at this private nursing home in Patna Sushma Devi is out of danger. The 30-year-old has just had a pair of scissors removed from her stomach.

The surgical device was left behind there five years ago when she had a C-section delivery at the Patna Medical College and Hospital.

The villager, who belongs to Nalanda district, had been complaining of discomfort ever since. But it was not until Sunday when an ultrasound was done that the cause of her pain was discovered.

Doctors say Sushma Devi is extremely lucky as she could have even died.

''Because the scissors has been in the abdomen for quite some time it was a major operation. We found the scissors lying wedged near the main artery of the right leg. And since the scissors were very sharp it could have caused bleeding, leading to death,'' said Dr U N Prasad, Surgeon.

On the eve of the operation Sushma was quite glad that she could now live without the niggling pain.

''I am really worried. I have two children at home. We are very poor,'' said Sushma, Patient.

Her husband Ranjeet Prasad is also happy that the pair of scissors has been removed. But he is quite angry with the Patna MCH.

''I am going to ask the Patna MCH hospital to compensate us for this operation. I had to spend a lot for this operation. We are poor people. I am going to fight my case,'' said Ranjeet Prasad, Sushma's husband.

Just last month, a doctor at a private clinic in Darbhanga left behind a towel in the abdomen of a patient after a C-section.

Both cases show how negligent doctors can be and just how wrong a simple operation can go.
