| A motley group of homemakers, children, professionals and tourists shrugged off weekend inertia on Monday and showed up for a lesson in history at Delhi's Mehrauli Archaeological Park.
And Mehrauli's lesser known ruins were the right place to start the INTACH heritage walk.
As walk leader Jaya Basera took them through landmarks like the Jamali Kamali Mosque and Metcalfe's Guesthouse, what unfolds is an exquisite amalgam of Hindu, Islamic and colonial architecture.
''The column and beam structure is the Kangoora, in typically Hindu architectural style, found in temples. The arches are Islamic,'' said Jaya Basera, Walk leader.
For Rebecca Green, on an exchange programme from Berkley, California, the walk was an opportunity to soak in Delhi's heritage.
''India has so much history and in California, everything is so new. Nothing is old and so it is so exciting to see the old structures and to learn about the history because we don't learn very much about it in California. So, while we are here we are looking for opportunities, to learn more about that and old structures that we don't get to see in America,'' said Rebecca Green, student.
Even for those who have lived in Delhi all their lives, it was a road to new discoveries.
''I learnt about natural habitat and the old centuries. Nowadays I know what's happening. I want to know what was happening earlier. How they did the things, why they did the things, why and what the monuments meant and how they were built,'' said Nitya Jagati, Student.
For businessman Karan Sharma and his banker wife Priayanka, it was a Sunday morning well spent.
''We do generally go out on the weekend it is generally to more mundane things like going to a mall. The weather is fanstastic and to get to know that 100 acres of land filled with all these archaeology things is a good change. I enjoyed it thoroughly.'' Karan Sharma, Businessman.
