Acid attack victim dies inBangalore
Fathima had been fighting for survival for almost two weeks, ever since being forced to drink acid by her husband, could not cling on tolifeany longer
 INDIA , 22-August-2007  1:34:40 AM
Hina Fathima, the young woman who had been attacked by her husband earlier this month in Mysore, died in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Fathima had been fighting for survival for almost two weeks, ever since being forced to drink acid by her husband, could not cling on to life any longer.

She is survived by her three young children and grieving parents.

''He kept asking for more money and a vehicle. He threatened to shave her head. We gave a complaint, but his family reassured us that she would be safe.''

''She was with us a year ago, but one month ago, her father in law persuaded us to send her back. And then after just 20 days, he attacked her with acid and burnt her eyes with cigarettes,'' said Zabeen, Fathima's mother.

Horrific as it is, Fathima's case is not an isolated one.

More than 60 women have been attacked with acid in Karnataka in the last few years alone, and these are only the cases that have come to light.

Activists, however, have been campaigning for years to draw attention to this issue.

''What is really disheartening is that Fathima's is not a one-off case. We already have six to seven women who have succumbed to their injuries having gained some form of medical attention.''

''The campaign has to go back and start pressurizing the government again - announcements and packages are just not enough,'' said Sanjana, Campaign And Struggle Against Acid Attacks On Women.

The vulnerability of women, even in their own homes, is a tragic reality, but the violent and painful death of Fathima has caused a feeling of absolute outrage in the local community.

And it has highlighted the need for greater action to avoid any such incidents in the future.
