ABVP gets violent
Firing took place inside the college during students' union elections last year.
 INDIA , 23-August-2007  3:32:19 AM
Student union elections are being held on Thursday and Friday in government colleges across Madhya Pradesh.

Everyone is hoping they will go off peacefully as the run up has seen violence and threats allegedly involving supporters of the ABVP.

Teachers at Bhopal's Government P G College are a terrified lot.

Firing took place inside the college during students' union elections last year.

On Monday alleged ABVP supporters chanted religious slogans on the campus.

NSUI supporters complained to the principal, but when she spoke to them she was threatened.

''A few students entered my chamber and complained that outside elements were trying to create disturbance. However, I had already checked and had found that there was no outside element on the college campus.

''I asked them to name the elements but they could not name any. Instead, they said, ''Madam, beware. Last year only one round was fired. This year, it can be ten,'' said Abha Gargav, Principal, Government PG College, Bhopal.

Professor roughed up

Last year alleged ABVP supporters roughed up Professor H S Sabharwal of Madhav College in Ujjain. The professor died soon afterwards.

Ironically, no elections are being held in Madhav college at Ujjain this year.

Last week a college principal in Tikamgarh was beaten up again by alleged ABVP supporters.

Members of the outfit also clashed with NSUI workers in Jabalpur. But the ABVP says it was not involved.

''These are rumours spread to cut the ABVP votes,'' said Lakhan Mehra, ABVP worker.

Principal Gargav did not report the matter to police but still the police presence on the campus has been increased.

There are more policemen than students on college campuses across Madhya Pradesh.

Elaborate precautions have been taken to prevent violence during polling.

For the first time no candidate with a criminal background can contest nor can those who no longer have a connection with college.
