| The Chennai Corporation is gearing up for a transition from Onyx to a new contract for garbage clearance with JBM Fanalca Environment Management Limited. The company’s Chennai-based subsidiary Neel Metal Products Limited will begin operations in four Corporation zones from Saturday.
As the contract with CES Onyx comes to a close on August 24, after seven years, the familiar green bins and giant compactors doing the rounds in the Ice House, Kodambakkam and Adyar zones will now give way to the Neel Metal’s vehicles and bins. In addition to the three zones, taken care of by Onyx, the Corporation has added Pulianthope zone (Zone III) to the list of privatised conservancy operations.
The Corporation’s Superintending Engineer for Solid Waste Management said that 150 vehicles would be pressed into service. On Thursday, the new vehicles were lined up at the Napier Park. The waste collection will be done door-to-door.
Source segregation of garbage into bio-degradable and bio non-degradable waste — a recommendation under the Municipal Solid Waste Rules, 2000 — is one of the conditions of the contract. However, it may not come into effect right on the first day of the operation.
The private company has been asked to start awareness campaign on source segregation in co-ordination with residents’ welfare associations in a week’s time.
