Ansals in dock
The Ansals refused to comment on camera but off camera they have denied all charges.
 INDIA , 24-August-2007  1:57:48 AM
In a new twist in Delhi's Uphaar Cinema fire case, Ansals, the owners, have mortgaged the building to the Punjab National Bank and taken a loan of Rs 43 crore against it.

This, after they told the court they did not have the Rs 12 crore they were ordered to pay as compensation for the Uphaar tragedy.

The Uphaar victims' association has alleged that:

Sushil and Gopal Ansal have mortgaged the Uphaar Cinema to two banks simultaneously

They took Rs three crore from HDFC Ltd to pay part of Rs 12 crore compensation

But at the same time they also mortgaged the building to the Punjab National Bank without the court's knowledge and raised Rs 43 crore against it for their construction company Ansal Property and Infrastructure Ltd which plans big urban development and construction projects.

Now the association has filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking the CBI to investigate these charges.

The Ansals refused to comment on camera but off camera they have denied all charges.

They say they will reply in court. When NDTV approached the Punjab National Bank, CMD SC Chakraborty said he had no information about such a mortgage.

Yet, the papers show that such a deal was struck even while Ansals told the court that they did not have the money to pay compensation to families of the victims.

Now they are waiting for the next hearing in the SC on September 20, where they hope the Ansals' double game will be exposed.
