Cholera breaks out in Orissa
Every single home in the Dongasil village in Kashipur block reported stomach infections for the last couple of weeks.
 INDIA , 27-August-2007  2:27:28 AM
There has been an outbreak of cholera in Kashipur in Orissa's Raygada district.

A microbiological test conducted on 43 samples collected from patients has confirmed the presence of 'vibrio cholaria' virus in at least 31 cases.

Every single home in the Dongasil village in Kashipur block reported stomach infections for the last couple of weeks.

While it was suspected to be diarrhoea initially, a team from MKCG medical college, Berhampur as well as the RMRC have now confirmed a cholera outbreak in 26 villages in this tribal dominated district.

''We are taking action,'' said Naveen Patnaik, CM, Orissa.

Primary health care centres and local hospitals in Kashipur are crowded with seriously ill patients. The district administration says at least 1784 people have been treated so far.

Twelve medical teams have been sent from the three medical colleges in the state while 18 mobile units are moving to inaccessible areas to provide treatment.

Every village also has a point person who along with the anganwadi worker is tracking new cases. Local hospitals too have been asked to create special cholera wards to help cope with the patient load.

So far it isn't clear how the virus has spread. Mapping studies done by the district collector does not point to any clear cause since the villages are not contiguous.

He says his primary role is to stem the epidemic. Kashipur was in news in 2001 for the large number of deaths caused by consumption of mango kernel.
