Artisans undeterred by rain
Inside the huge pandal in Central Mumbai, 50 artisans, local and migrants, work on idols, moulding, carving and painting idols big and small.
 INDIA , 28-August-2007  1:7:24 AM
Every year Ganesh Chaturthi, Maharashtra's favourite festival, coincides with the monsoon. It means a lot of trouble for artisans who spend hours and days to get the massive idols ready.

Inside the huge pandal in Central Mumbai, 50 artisans, local and migrants, work on idols, moulding, carving and painting idols big and small.

But since Ganesh Chaturthi is just a few days away, come rain or sun, the work has to be done.

''This festival always comes during rains. So we make adequate preparations. This pandal is waterproof. The idols are made of plaster of paris which does not easily dissolve in water,'' said Vijay Khate, Owner, Ganesh Idol Making Unit.

The rain gods may have given Mumbaikars a tough time this year, but the artisans working on the Ganesh idols are undeterred and hard at work.

Huge establishments like these can make adequate preparations but the small pandals that have come up on most streets in Mumbai making clay idols are the worst sufferers.

In the lane in Lalbaug, several people have rented space from the municipal corporation to set up shop during the festival.

''We incur 50 per cent loss during rains. We are situated on the street so the water gets flows into our shop and the lower surface of the idols gets wet and some might also get destroyed. So we try to keep at least some idols on an elevated platform,'' said Sailesh Bhagwat Owner, Ganesh Idol Shop, Lalbaug.

But artisans say the festival spirit is so high that no rain can dampen it, a sentiment shared by many in the city.
