| Violence marred the function held by the Puducherry unit of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) at Ariyankuppam on Tuesday to launch its membership drive.
Shortly after AICC general secretary V.Narayanasamy, IYC president Ashok Tanwar, general secretary Chandan Kumar Yadav and other party leaders arrived at the venue, a marriage hall, some of the Youth Congress activists started moving towards the dais.
A group attempted to prevent the slogan-shouting IYC activists from surging forward. Plastic chairs started flying and glass panes were smashed at the entrance. They did not spare even the decorative lamps installed on the premises.
A section of the activists who were chased away from the venue damaged the digital banners carrying the pictures of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party MP Rahul Gandhi outside the venue. Traffic on the Puducherry-Cuddalore highway was disrupted.
Even as press photographers were taking pictures, some workers attempted to manhandle them. However, they were stopped by their party colleagues.
Youth Congress sources said “failure” on the part of the unit leadership to give prominence to a functionary of the area in the organisational affairs triggered the violence.
