AIIMS docs threaten to intensify
The graduates have complained that this leaves them without the option of either applying abroad or even finding jobs at home.
 INDIA , 29-August-2007  3:16:55 AM
The AIIMS doctors, who have gone on strike in protest against the long delay in getting their degrees, are now threatening to intensify their strike if they do not get their degrees by 5 pm on Wednesday evening.

Seven hundred medical graduates have been agitating against the Health Minister for not signing their degrees leaving the graduates with just provisional degrees.

The graduates have complained that this leaves them without the option of either applying abroad or even finding jobs at home.

Seventy graduates from the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences or AIIMS have been released from preventive custody hours after they went on strike on Tuesday night.

Doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences or AIIMS prevented from going to Health Minister's residence.

After a two-year wait on Tuesday they decided they had enough.

Preetpal, who wants to apply for higher studies abroad, says a provisional degree won't serve his purpose.

''I need the formal degree to fill my applications. If I don't get it soon, I will end up losing a year,'' said Preetpal, resident doctor, AIIMS.

Students say degrees were last awarded in 2004. 646 UG & PG doctors have since completed their course.

Another 49 doctors will be graduating this year.

Desperate measure

Students insist they had to resort to a strike as a desperate measure as they have received no reponse despite making several attempts to contact the health minister.

''We were told it was because of the convocation blah blah but despite contacting them several times, we have received no proper information from anyone,'' said Ankur, resident doctor, AIIMS.

Yet another strike by the doctors of AIIMS and as the health minister remains silent on the issue, the strike is likely to continue on Wednesday and as always it is the patients who are going to suffer the most.
