| Is it just initial enthusiasm or will the Mumbai police's campaign against drunk driving actually yield more success.
In July, Mumbai police began a sharp crackdown on drunk drivers. Two months later the result has taken even these policemen by surprise.
Cases of accidental deaths have actually fallen to half.
Between July and August 2007, 4,500 cases of drunk-driving were registered as against 1,500 cases they usually book in a whole year.
In fines police have collected Rupees 80 lakh, four times the amount of an annual average and most importantly cases of accidental deaths due to drunk driving and rash driving have fallen.
In 2006 there were 68 deaths up to July, this year the number has dropped to 38.
''The number of accidental deaths have come down this year. Even minor accident cases
have dropped.
''We have nabbed doctors, engineers, architects, and youth from affluent families,'' said Vijay Kamble, Joint Commissioner, Traffic.
It was the infamous Alister Pereira case, in which 8 people were killed by a drunk youngster that brought about this massive police crackdown.
And if it turns out to be a sustained campaign and not just a temporary exercise it will mean a change in attitude.
Mumbaikars will have to think twice before hitting the road, drunk.
